Area Model and SBAC Grades 3 – 5

Here is a sampling of how SBAC assesses the conceptual understanding of Mulitplication / Division – as stated in the Operations in Algebra Standards in Grades 3-5

With each sample, ask yourself which strategy is needed to solve: Place Value Strategies, Properties of Operations, Relationship of Multplication and Division or Multiplicative Comparisons.  

Think about the conceptual knowledge and understanding that is needed to solve these problems that is BEYOND rote algorithmic procedures. How can you use area and measurement to teach operations?
